Will the rain hurt the grapes?

September 14, 2009

Many people are asking if the rain hurts the grapes, and how it might affect the harvest. Well interestingly, a little rain — which is actually quite usual for September in the Napa Valley — can be a good thing. Davie Piña tells me his dad always said it “reinvigorated” the vines. Piña Vineyard Management oversees quite a lot of vineyards in the Napa Valley, and tells me that most thin-skinned varietals, the grapes most susceptible to inclement weather near harvest such as Pinot noir, are mostly in. A handful of growers with fruit still out who might already have been battling mildew may need to spray to combat further rot — but otherwise, the rinse is welcomed by the dry and dusty vines at this time of year.
