A jewel of a pick

September 9, 2009

Gemstone Vineyard, predominantly a red wine producer shares that they will start their pick on Friday with Chardonnay, which they produce in very limited quantities from a small block of older vines at the base of their property. This year Founder Paul Frank reports that although cluster counts are on target, berries are very small and it looks like yields will be down a bit — but flavors are exceptional according to Frank, and the vines show no end of season stress at all, which he attributes in part to late spring rains and mild summer weather.

Gemstone also reports that following the trend seen in many neighboring vineyards red varietals across the board seem to be in lock step when it comes to development, following a slightly uneven veraison. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc are all neck and neck as we head into the next phase of harvest 09.
