Magic numbers

IMG_0443With continued warm weather sampling has begun in earnest and in labs across the Valley they are dusting off their refractometers and taking sugar measurements. Since Robin Lail’s family has been growing grapes in the Napa Valley for more than 125 years it seemed appropriate to check in with her team for a few notes.

Julien Fayard, an esteemed member of the winemaking team for Lail Vineyards shared that the Yountville block used for the Georgia Sauvignon Blanc was about ten days out, registering at 22 brix and 2.9 PH. Checking records, it seems that this isabout on track with both 07 (picked August 28th) and 08 (picked August 25th).
