An interesting twist on the 09 harvest

August 12, 2009

Many of our vintners are reporting an unusual phenomenon in their vineyards this year – Cabernet Sauvignon, traditionally among the last varietals to ripen, is currently ahead of Merlot and Cab Franc.

“We’ve seen a real acceleration in the last 7-10 days in all varietals,” notes Dominus Estate’s Tod Mostero. “But it looks like the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot could be coming in after Cabernet Sauvignon this harvest, which is certainly not the norm.”

The ripening order seems to be mirroring a similar bloom pattern earlier in the spring, when vines began bloom, stalled out and then picked up again. Although certainly not unheard of, this will likely be a signature expression of the 2009 vintage and one we’ll be tracking as the fruit moves from vine to crush bin, and the wines emerge in the cellar.

Stay tuned.
