Veraison

Veraison

The August heat seems to have arrived and another harvest season is beginning to unfurl. At this point in their maturation process, most varietals planted in Yountville are at 50% veraison (color change) and are very responsive to temperature changes. Our signature warm summer days are balanced by cool nights — ideal conditions for ripening a perfect vintage, and this year is shaping up nicely. Winemakers are beginning the annual ritual of walking the vineyard rows in the cool of the morning to taste and collect berry samples. Bins are getting washed, trailers are being oiled, and the palpable energy that always seems to accompany the harvest is setting in. Seems like a perfect time to start a blog.

We invite you to check in for news and information from the Yountville Appellation’s 2009 harvest as reported by our member growers and winemakers. Daily reports from the vineyards and cellars will continue, and we look forward to your comments, questions and feedback as we relay information about the progress of our harvest.
